If you believe that decentralization makes Diaspora unique …

… and think facilitating pod-installation for the average user should be a priority, please reshare this. Let the core developers know.

Recently, in a discussion in the comments of a post, Sarah (from Diaspora Inc) said that studies show other features are more important to social-networking users than decentralization, and that D*’s short-term goals did not prioritize this.

“IMO privacy and decentralization aren’t good enough reasons to get people to switch away from other social networks. We [Diaspora] already have all the people who care about that. :) To get other people to join, we need a product they actually want to use. Diaspora Inc. is currently focusing on that. But the core devs as a whole, a group that includes the folks from Diaspora Inc. as well as several of us volunteers, realize that in addition, the federation and installation code needs building out and/or revising before we take the code out of alpha.”

When I disagreed about the importance of decentralization for Diaspora’s users, her response:

“You’re still free to disagree, but I suggest doing some research before making assertions about what is and is not important to people when it comes to social networking. There’s some very interesting academic research in this area, in addition to other large studies conducted by the for-pay research centers. Enjoy, it’s interesting reading.”

So, buddycloud (beta.buddycloud.org) now has topics that can be created to post to, and images/videos are embedding. I wonder where it will go? I must admit, I do like the look of the project. Like a brighter, friendlier twitter/chat something. You can even change your status etc now. though my avatar is still a funny looking gravatar, lol.
It’s still exciting to see these projects grow and develop.
#buddycloud . Does anyone know what the possibility of #federation will be with their particular platform?

I’m seeing this all over the place. As a mother of five (and being someone who was a rotten, angsty teenager) I feel qualified to comment:

I think the point is ‘was shooting it over the top?’ and it was. This man buys his 15 year old daughter a laptop and cellphone? And then shoots it rather than give it away to someone less fortunate ? Maybe he should have instilled in her a sense of the all-mighty dollar by paying her for chores so that she could buy her own cell phone and laptop. I have five kids aged 3-23 and none of them have, or will have, a cell phone or laptop bought for them at that age. All a kid has to do is turn on the tv and see insanity all around them. Back in the ‘good ol days’ there weren’t reruns of the Towers falling down, over and over and over again, 24 hour coverage of OJ Simpson fleeing the cops. Our kids are exposed to total insanity. They see it as soon as they turn on the computer (which he bought for her) or the TV. Back in the ‘good ol days’ raised some very abusive damaged people. Kids obeyed their parents out of fear, not out of respect… respect is learned later. I grew up in the 80’s, just as beating your kids was becoming less popular, but even still, you can see the damage in many people today. Yes, kids grow up with a sense of entitlement, and that’s definitely not ideal, but giving your kids expensive gifts that they don’t work for does NOT help, and then shooting the same expensive gift teaches them nothing later in life. And regardless, it is not till we are adults that the full ramifications of our childhood are realized.
